Every year as the ice breaks up at the mouth of Lake Huron, the chunks crowd into the River and become jammed. The same thing happens in other places along the line of the Great Lakes. The Coast Guard cutters from the U.S. and Canada have "Ice Duty" and do indeed "cut" through the ice jams in the River so that freighters that become entrapped can keep moving. I watched one team work at freeing one freighter; it took over 45 minutes to move less than one mile downriver.
