The most celebrated among North Carolina's WILD horses are the Spanish mustangs of Corolla. These rugged and hardy wild horses are proven to be descendants of the Spanish mustangs brought to the New World by explorers and colonists as early as the 14th century. Expert examinations of their physical and physiological characteristics, as well as DNA testing confirm their lineage. They have been given protected status and county ordinances prohibit people from getting within 50 feet of the horses. They run free in the eleven-mile long remote area bounded on the East by the Atlantic Ocean, on the West by Currituck Sound, and on the North and South by fences that stretch from ocean to sound.

And they tend to get out of the sun and bad weather in the carports of what few houses are up there - imagine going to get your car and finding a REAL mustang? Beautifully done, Rona!

Thank you all...I have tons of photos of the wild mustangs - most of them are inland ones (not on the beach) and I was so hoping to get them on the beach or dunes. Thankfully, as we are leaving to drive home - there they were up ahead. I grabbed my camera (no time to change lenses or anything) and ran down the beach with them, snapping as I went. So you will be seeing a lot more of the horses!

I can't even begin to imagine the thrill of seeing these beautiful wild mustangs - and how lucky you were to capture them exactly where you wanted to before leaving for home! Photo Fate smiled sweetly and generously upon you, Rona! Gorgeous capture - I'm looking forward to seeing every one of them - Encore, encore! :)

Wow...think I will make this my next venture, particularly since I'm only about 5 hours from there. I've heard about the wild horses...did you stay where they were. So interesting...and I am so note rested! This is a beautiful capture, Rona...so glad you were able to get them on the beach!
