OPEN AIR Philadelphia

"OPEN AIR" Philadelphia

---
From now (it began in September) until October 14, 2012, internationally acclaimed new media artist Rafael Lozano-Hemmer’s public art project “Open Air” will illuminate the Benjamin Franklin Parkway with enormous three-dimensional light formations in the night sky.

Every night from 8-11 p.m., participants can use their voices to activate 24 robotic searchlights placed along a half-mile section of the Parkway, all via a custom iPhone app developed for “Open Air.”

The app analyzes the users’ voices for frequency, intonation and volume, and then converts them into unique searchlight formations in the sky.

The lights react, both in brightness and position, creating a canopy of light over the city.

I shot this hand-held with my Canon 24-70mm lens (the original, not the most recent incarnation) which has no image stabilization.

The tall, colorfully lit building toward the left of the frame is the Comcast Center, Philadelphia's tallest building. To the left, and seemingly dwarfed, is City Hall (more than two miles from where I was standng). Benjamin Franklin Parkway is lined on both sides by flags from countries around the world--each lit with its own flood light. They appear yellow in this image.

What a stunning image Michelle and what a quirky idea this is. Sounds like something that would work in our battered city at the moment. We did have the lights of hope but I think its time to move on and think more positively and this would certainly be a cool idea, although to be honest we don't have too many tall buildings left.

Excellent commentary, as always and kudos for the spectacular handheld capture without IS. ...you are one adventurous and spunky lady! I've never heard of this technology before (Austin needs this!) -very cool - but can't help but wonder what a laugh like Fran Dresher's would do to the light beams...Incredibly-Steady-Hands-Michelle, indeed!
