City of the Dead

City of the Dead
City of the Dead
In olden days, in New Orleans, people used to be buried underground. However, since New Orleans is below sea level, the caskets would uproot from the ground and float down the streets during heavy rain / floods. Sometimes they would end up in nearby parishes or many miles away, and with no labeling on the caskets it was difficult to find out where they belonged. As a result, the dead are now buried in above ground graves called mausoleums and appropriate labeling on the enclosure where the deceased is kept is required. With their "cities of the dead", above-ground graves, and "oven" vaults, Louisiana has a unique and often mysterious menagerie of graveyards, cemeteries, and mausoleums not found anywhere else in the world. (Information from the internet.)

Great image and info here, Carol, same in the Philippines, we have cemeteries above the ground and even huge mausoleums built for the dead.
