Downy Woodpecker feeding time

Downy Woodpecker feeding time
Daddy Downy Woodpecker (on the left) had just fed some suet to his fledgling when I captured this out-of-the-ordinary 'saliva-pulling' that happened. Apparently the Downy's tongue is long and barbed and they have extra sticky saliva, all for capturing insects. When Daddy closed his beak after feeding some suet to his youngster, his tongue & beak trapped some saliva from the fledge and this is the result.

Captured June 18th 2012 at my home.

This is a spectacular and gorgeous image.

I saw this phenomenon with a "father and son" red-bellied woodpecker. But it wasn't composed this nicely by THAT pair. You took great advantage of their pose with your DOF.
