If you had not guessed I focused on the nose instead of the eyes for a purpose. These magnificent animals can smell food (seals, etc) from 60 miles away. Their nose has evolved such that they breath (smell) in from the front but notice they have a place to exhale from the side that prevents contamination of the front sensors. Evolution for survival in the harsh environment of the tundra and polar ice where food is scarce.

He looks about as cool as I feel sitting at my computer desk this morning Emile! Today is the official opening of our Ski Season, and there is a good cover of snow on the ground there already! This is a wonderful close up portrait of this remarkable animal and his nose, and thanks for all the info! Just incredible!
