Love the pier as a wonderful leading line to forever and beyond. The deep blue mystical water has just enough contrast to fit perfectly with the sky. The lights and the reflection add that wonderful element of light that stops and holds the eye. This is just so beautiful, Kerry.

  Hi Heather,
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I'm really pleased that the photo works for you!

Twilight - dawn or evening - is really my favorite time of day for seascapes. And, as you mention, this pier fit the scene nicely ... I particularly liked how the early-morning cool blue contrasted with the warm color of the lights and reflections.

As (almost) always with outdoor scenes, I went with a daylight/sunlight White Balance - a "neutral" setting that so often reproduces the color of light just the way I saw it.

And as with all stationary scenes, I used a tripod to keep the camera steady and to fine-tune the composition. Since the exposure was a long one, I wanted to avoid any possible vibration from clicking the shutter. So, along with a cable shutter release to keep my hand off the camera, I also used mirror lockup (a shooting feature that's available on some DSLRs).
