This groundhog is a frequent visitor to our back yard. Whenever you get to close, he stands up and sizes up the danger he might be in. If he feels secure he will go back to eating the grass or he takes off into the woods! I took this through a window with a 70-300 zoom and he still sensed my presence!

GREAT CATCH Used to see these guys all the time out your way ( EARLY AM ) and NEVER HAD A CAMERA... Cold Spring Harbor hatchery is the only one left on LI Conn River closed 18 mths ago. That really cut into the easy Osprey shooting in the area... Jack

We had a couple that took up residence under the porch at our old house, but I never did get close enough to get a decent picture. Of course, we were trying hard to get rid of the destructive buggers, so I really wasn't intending to make nice. You got a good one of your little friend!

Well, their babies are adorable, but I'm with Monnie--basically. Still, this is a lovely portrait. He looks so intelligent and alert.
