Au Sable Light Station
Built in 1874, this lighthouse guides ship captains through one of the most dangerous sandstone reefs in Lake Superior, and is today solar powered. The reef lies along the shortest available route from Whitefish Point to Marquette and has always been heavily navigated. Interestingly, the tower foundation was built 23 feet below the sand surface to reach bedrock and the walls are over 4 feet thick at the base to withstand the fierce Lake Superior storms.
