Hutong Patio
With the visit of the Chinese President last week and talk of human rights, I went rummaging through my old Beijing slides (itwas before I went digital). Originally built in the 12th century, hutongs were the predominant living quarters for almost all but the aristocrats in Beijing. Similar to a typical U.S. neighborhood, but they were surrounded by a high fence entered by a gate into long alleyways. Doors opened from the alleys into a "quad", four homes off a central patio. Inside (they asked us not to take photos), they were very small and sparsely furnished, but comfortable enough for the occupants. In the 1900's many were torn down and replaced by more modern buildings, but hutongs still occupy one third of the total housing area in Beijing.

I lived for five years in Korea. When you get out into the back country you will find similar housing. Much different living than what we westerners know.

I've read descriptions of hutongs but don't think I've ever seen a photo of one before...Altho, certainly not the same - it reminds me of some of the rustic alleyways in (of all places) New Orleans! Super information and a great shot, Ann - I just went from Jamaica to China in one jump thru your gallery! :)

Always enjoy the story behind the picture, finding it a fasinating read. With all the greenery, this looks quite charming and beautiful. Love the composition and the colors, perhaps it was more cramped then what we are used to, but its beauty stands out my friend.
