Hamilton-Aperture Priority/Minimal DOF
Another very difficult project. I've been trying to get a portrait of Ham for two weeks, so I thought I would work the tips in Lesson 3 and try to get an image that showed detail in his face, but also his true black color. I set a custom white balance, turned off the Auto Lighting Optimization and used spot metering and exposure compensation. I used my tripod, a cable release and selected an AF point. I would have preferred to use a smaller aperture to increase my DOF on his face, but then I was losing the bokeh, and my room is too small to move my subject farther from the background. It was also difficult to focus on his eye with a tripod, but the cable release helped. After all this, I still adjusted the color a bit in PS. This works with the Rule of Thirds, and maybe even the Golden Spiral, which is pretty deep stuff for this kid. But perhaps my vision for the perfection of this image is, like the eye of the Golden Spiral, a place always approached but never reached.
