Animals - January 2011

I was wondering how do folks pick a name for their pet? I mean, how do they come by such names that seem to really fit? Naming at infancy is hard don't you think?

Suki means 'beloved' and is a Japanese name. Quite fitting for this beauty.

Christine, Goldens are such loving dogs, although I have never had one. My neighbor has one and she will come lay in my lap. I lost my "beloved" Newfie, Maggie to kidney failure a few weeks ago and seeing Suki with her from legs crossed reminded so much of her. Great capture!

I am truly sorry to hear about your 'beloved' family member Danny. Thank God we don't have to go through that kind of loss (I'm not sure I could handle it). We are volunteer foster parents for dogs like this one- for Guide Dogs of Canada, only raising them for the first year of their life- yes, it is heartbreaking, but the joy you feel when your puppy goes off to learn how to assist someone that needs help is a very wonderful feeling. It's a small loss to us, but knowing we've help someone have a better life out weighs our pain.
Thank you very much for your words.
Smiling Chris

Chris, to make matters worse, we lost our St. Bernard, Molly in July as well. We had given "forever" homes to both our "girls", taking them both from foster care. It's good to see people like you that are willing to volunteer to raise them and then give them up. I'm not sure I could give them up.

I agree with you Danny, I could never give my dogs up either!!! I have a black newfoundland named Heidi and she is about 4 yrs old. We lost our German Shepherd 4yrs ago and our Great Dane 3 yrs ago. We have a Pekingese and an adopted border collie as well.
Christine this is such a beautiful image!!! I love dogs so much and love to see them here in bp!!!

What a beautiful dog Suki is, Chris! You had no problem finding a name for this golden, now did you (or did you supply the name)? It is so amazing of you to foster these animals! Bravo to you! Has Suki met Bubbles? Wonderful image with the legs crossed!

Thank you guys, appreciate your kind words.

Tom, we never named Suki- Canadian Guide Dogs for the Blind, who own her did. I think what they usually do is go through the alphabet~ so this litter got the S's. I think the name suits her perfectly. Suki is such a sweet, shy, timid at first, little dog.

We've had Suki since the 27th of Dec. and Bubbles showed her who was boss- Bubbles lunged at her nose - did not bite, but did put her mouth on Suki's nose... after that, they became friends...
I'll try to make a few shots of them together tonight (it's our last night with Suki).

I like that name since you told what it means! It is difficult to pick the right names at "infancy" though because the pets change some as they "grow up". My oldest dog, Prancer, has the perfect name for him because he prances when he walks & plays. However, my younger dog, Bear, was named because he ran like a bear when he was a puppy...his run has picked up speed & he JUMPS a lot now! A good name for him would have been Pogo! :)

Suki is a beautiful pup & poses well for her pictures!

Thank you Karen, and HAPPY NEW YEAR my friend! Love your icon!

PS I think Suki would of been an appropriate name for one of your cuties too- considering the name is Japanese.

I love both Suki and Bubbles! Can't we all just get along? LOL! I'm sorry you have to give Suki up, Chris, but the fact she will be such an important part of someone's day to day survival must give you some satisfaction. Still, you and yours are real troopers for what you do!!

Oh, Chris...I had no idea that you do this! It's wonderful. Suki is such a beautiful girl...I wish she could come to my home. I just lost my Coco (a Boykin) about 1 month ago to old age, really...she was an absolute member of our family and my trusted friend and photo partner. We live on a very large property in the country and she was ALWAYS at my side. I miss her terribly. I admire what you do, Chris, and your love of animals :)

Well Thomas, it was difficult not being here the day Suki went home- but my fam was here to say bye- I looked at my watch the time it was Suki's pickup- I felt a 'sting' in my stomach- it amazes me HOW MUCH I WILL MISS HER-
We are awaiting for the foster couple to go away again on holidays, so we can watch her again! Suki is such a sweet puppy! Looking forward to volunteering with our new pup!

Hi Patricia, nice to see you here-
my heartfelt sympathy to you and your family ~ I DO know how you feel- we do feel the same, but not so intense-
People ask us why do you do this work? They say, they couldn't give up the pup-We tell them - we have the joy/love of a puppy for one year- we give them the BEST start in life- then they HELP someone that NEED'S them-
Smiling Chris
PS soon I will be uploading Suki with Bubbles- that was an interesting meet!

I bet it was a difficult thing, Chris, saying goodbye to such a beauty! Hope you are doing okay. An image of Suki and Bubbles meeting, wow! Now that will be neat to see! Bubbles is my hero! Of course Suki is too, and your entire family as well, for fostering these wonderful, intelligent dogs!
