A dreadlocks wearing Ironwoman shows her grit, concentration and determination on her way to glory in the cycling stage of a Half Ironman.
I really like the reflection of the road markings in the sunglasses.

This sports photograph was made in Port Macquarie, NSW, Australia on a slightly overcast spring morning.

Canon EOS 40D & Canon USM 100-300mm Lens: RAW, Manual settings of f/5.6 @ 1/500sec, 250mm, ISO 100, Hand held.
Lightroom 2.2 & Photoshop CS3.

Enjoy!

THE MAKING OF 'Dreads':

My best Port Macquarie Panthers Camera Club friend and I headed into town for yet another Ironman event to see what we could bag.
I have photographed a handful of these gruelling events before and am always attracted to capturing the faces whenever possible. It is the faces which show the true impact of these events on the competitors by their different expressions.
I took up my post atop a long uphill section of the course and with my camera set to continuous focus and using my long lens I was able to lock on to the riders and follow their action as they came towards me, making a shot of they were wearing an interesting expression.
Each and every photograph of these fine athletes in my collection is a special moment caught in time to me.

Enjoy!

  Hi Dennis;
This really drew my eye, for many reasons.
The black and white dramatizes the grueling endurance race. The racers expression is telling, isn't it? I didn't see the reflection as a reflection until I read your post. However, I did notice the strong lines in the glasses, wonder about them. Thanks for filling me in. The long lines in the road...and the racer in the distance emphasize the distance they travel.
Very cool image and congrats on this wonderful image.

  Welcome to the Half Ironman event *CARLA*!

My warmest Aussie springtime thanks for your most insightful and encouraging feedback on my cycling photography.

I was tempted to clone out those lines but the more I studied the photograph the more I felt they should remain as to me they seem symbolic of the long road travelled and echo the lines on the road.
