Spectators
This group of Hypholoma fasciculare (Sulphur Tuft) look so much like a group of spectators at a football match.

This close-up fungi photograph was made along the trail at the Swan's Crossing camping area in the Kerewong State Forest, west of Kew, NSW, Australia.

Canon EOS D60 & Canon 28-135 USM IS Lens: RAW, Manual settings of f/27 @ 1/250sec, 115mm, ISO 100, Tethered Vivitar 285HV flash unit, Hand held.
Lightroom 2.2 & Photoshop CS3.

Enjoy!

THE MAKING OF 'Spectators':

After a few days and nights of rain I was on a Sunday outing with an intrepid group of photographers from the Port Macquarie Panthers Camera Club. We all prayed for a rainless day and our prayers were heard.
I had just returned from a circuit of the track and bagged some great shots when someone called me down to the creek to show me some fungi they had found. As it turned out they were in poor condition and not worth the pixels or battery power but when I turned around to go back to the picnic site I spotted this interesting little group sheltering cosily between two logs.
Having had previous success in using my Vivitar 285HV flash unit tethered off camera to emulate low angled sunlight I decided to use the same approach on this shot with a very pleasing result.
If the flash, no matter how low and diffused, still cast hard shadows behind or beside the subject, I turned my camera on its side and also used the pop-up TTL flash for fill light. The exposures were regulated by adjusting the aperture from f/22 to f/32.

Enjoy!

Oh my, Dennis, you are ever so clever.
I don't know that I would have thought to turn my camera on its side and utilize the on board flash. I'm tipping my ball cap to you. Great image.

  Strewth *CARLA*!

Welcome back to my Swan's Crossing fungi safari.
Mega thanks for your mega inspiring feedback on this miniature rainforest scene.
Yup! Never forget that your camera works in four cardinal positions and in all the ones in between as well. 8-)
