McEwen Depot, Oregon

McEwen Depot, Oregon
McEwen Depot, Oregon
McEwen Depot is the east end of the Sumpter Valley Railroad line and the starting point for each day's run. This is the location of their main rail yard and where they keep the steam locomotive over night. I was there early so I had the place all to myself.

Repair Work Before Todays Run
I could hear a lot of grinding and pounding and upon investigating found the steam engine needed a little repair work before the day's run. They worked on it for about an hour before firing it up. This is the barn where they keep it over night.

A little more history. The Sumpter Valley Railway dates back to 1890, when construction of the narrow gauge steam powered line began in Baker City. Built mainly to haul timber the tracks reached McEwen in 1892 and the gold mining town of Sumpter in 1896. By 1930 the business had declined and by 1947, most of the rail line had been abandoned.

Excellent photos, Denny. Great illustrations and history. Your main selection, The Depot, is outstanding in composition with the tracks leading us in on a diagonal and the jackpot of the bright red depot placed in the upper left third. What a wonderful place to spend the day.
