Thanks Michelle and Gina for your nice comments. I submitted this last year and it didn't fare well but I thought I'd give it another try. This photo is an example of "conceptual photography", in which an idea or concept is first envisioned in the mind's eye. Technically, this was a relatively easy photo to create. It was a simple matter of stopping down the aperture on my macro lens and metering for the brighter background, then using a hand-held strobe to illuminate the subject. Logistically though, the greatest challenge was finding a suitable location and "model" (...and then trying to coerse an energetic and confused mantis into sitting still long enough to get the shot).
