BetterPhoto.com Photo Contest Finalist   wasp face
wasp face
Hymenoptera:Vespidae, a paper wasp face, continuing with the subject of insect faces here. F32, 1/200s, ISO200, Ringflash, +4 diopter lens, plus a stack of extension tubes (12mm +20mm + 36mm Kenko) in between the camera and my 60mm Nikkor macro lens. This gives an approximate magnification of 3.5. This image is a focus stack of 3 frames. I adjusted exposure, contrast, color and reduced noise application. Cropped a little. Taken in Raleigh, NC USA on March 21, 2010

You're doing some excellent work with the insect faces series. What software application do you use to "stack" the images?

Jeff, thanks for the comment, and it is my pleasure to share the technical info as I discover it myself.
Thanks Edgar for your comment.
Michelle, I am also allergic to these and I carry my epi-pens in my camera bag. I ended up in the ER once during my insect photography outing..but it wont stop me... or it will!
Thanks Tania for looking at this image.
DAvid.. CombineZ is a freeware software that I use for focus stacking.

Way to go David! I'm glad to see this as a finalist, even though it competes with my own images.
(I've tried but,) I don't understand how you can shoot these insects while racking the focus. How do you get them to hold still long enough?
