Hi Janice and Ann... Yep! Large wading birds do it too and scientists say that another reason is because when wading in the water, if they stand on one foot, their foot would look like a tree stump- so when fish would come in closer, think they can hide by this stump (and sometimes feel cooler in the shade of this stump) then the bird can reach in and catch it... great way to hunt for their food eh? Ann, I'm not sure either if this one is a male or female... Thank you very much for commenting ladies, I appreciate you!! I'm glad you like the caption Janice... it took me a while to think of it!! Outstanding capture of this bird perched on one leg taken with sharp detail, wonderful color and great composition, Christine!! My birds often stand on one leg and switch off when they are on my shoulder. They do this sometimes when I give them a treat and they are holding and eating the snack.
