Tenacious...adaptable...enduring...spiritual...
...
Words that characterize the largest and most influential Indian tribe in North America...

The Navajo Nation.

Since the Long Walk in the 1860's, the Navajo Nation decimated to a population of only 8,000. It has increased to a stronghold of more than 210,000. About 60 percent of Navajos are 24 years old or younger.

One of our Monument Valley tour stops was for a photo shoot of this Navajo gentleman, who road his horse out to Ford's Point for the picture.

Have a Great Day

The Hogan, Utah
The hogan is a sacred home for the Diné (Navajo) people who practice traditional religion. Every family -- even if they live most of the time in a newer home -- must have the traditional hogan for ceremonies, and to keep themselves in balance.
To protect a fork-tip hogan against bitter winter cold, when a hogan is built in windy places (such as this Monument Valley one) it might be entirely covered with packed adobe or mud, if it was in a valley where earth or clay is available, and the opening always faced the east for morning warmth.
This one was built for the tourist so they could see inside.

Out first stop on our tour was at this Hogan for a look inside and where Susie showed us how the Navajo rugs are made. From the combing of the wool, spinning the wool into thread, dying the thread and weaving the rug, it can take six months or more to finish one rug. A lot of work goes into making one of them..
Used only light from the door for photo. Also a person should ask before taking a photo of a Navajo.

Wonderful series of photos, Denny! Very interesting information as well -- I was especially surprised to learn that so many are under the age of 24. And those hand-dyed and woven rugs are gorgeous!

Thanks for the tour Denny, when we were there last spring it rained the whole time, I sure would like to have been on that horse out there on Ford's Point. I met one of the code talkers while I was stationed in Korea. They are indeed a special people.

Truly wonderful shots of a very remarkable group of people, Denny. If everyone was Navajo in spirit, how much better the planet and its population would be.

Thank you very much, Dianna and Diane!
Diane, I guess you could call this both. The tour was provided by Goulding's Lodge where we stayed and it was both a guided and photo opt tour. It was done in a small open buss with many stops for picture taking...
