Bear Hug
Two young bears engaged in a "social" fight. Before the ice floes freeze freeze for the winter, Polar bears often engage in "social fighting" preparing them for their time out on the ice floes and the endless hunt for their main prey (seals).
Hibernating during the summer months these bears have not had food for several months and depend on the ice floes freezing over to allow them access to the seals
Taken on the tundra at Churchill Canada.

So great to see images of polar bears in their habitat (though the warming globe is complicating that)! Thanks for the sharing!

Thanks to both Thomas and Anne for commenting on Bear Hug. I debated about entering this into wild animals or the monthly theme "Passion". Spending several days out on the tundra (in tundra buggies of course)surrounded by bears has given me a new found passion for endangered species.
I will be returning in 2010 hoping to find the bear population healthy. This was shot in late fall of 2008. Luckily the bears had a longer season on the ice and came out of hibernation healthy. All the cubs that we saw where quite healthy and active.
The year previous to this there were some starving moms and cubs.A heart breaking situation for sure.
Complicated by potential oil drilling on Polar bear habitats scientists are rushing to study the effects that this may have on the bears, especially on the newborns in their dens.
