Great capture Johnnie. I believe the great way to get sooc DoF is to have lots of ground distance between you and subject and between subject and background. Then, the more you zoom in, the better the DoF like you are wanting. Hope this helps.

You're right about that! And I had all those factors, but in the original photo the bare limbs on the trees at the edge of the yard looked strange, so I kept softening them with Picasa 3 to achieve a more "artistic" effect. Just wish I knew how to do that in camera, if there is a way. In this case, I don't think the camera would let me go lower than f/5.6.
