A small bit of the Oil and Coal refinery in Linden, NJ --shot during a drive-by. It goes on for acres and acres and acres on both sides of the highway! This is the reason that many folks think of NJ as being ugly and smelly. Although it's what you see from the NJ Turnpike in this one locale, the overwhelming majority of New Jersey is plum gorgeous -- Perfect in Spring, Summer, Autumn. Winter can be on the cold side, but New Jersey is rarely a target for natural disasters. Almost never touched by catastrophic weather conditions, or out-of-control fire. Too bad about the out-of-control political corruption though. But in NJ, the cost of gasoline is among the lowest of all the States!
------------
As for the ugly, smelly refineries, they are part and parcel of America's best hope for energy independence. We NEED them!
------P.S. I am a Pennsylvanian!

We have a few of those up Tulsa way, too. And we're another of the cheaper states for gas...$1.41 yesterday.

Wonderful narrative to go with this outstanding capture, Michelle...your image does NJ proud. And I know what you mean...everyone thinks Michigan means "Detroit"...and nothing could be further from the truth!

This is the first time I've seen the "oil fields" of NJ so honored! It's a great picture and you should send it to each and everyone of those people who claim to be working for us in Washington!!!

How right you are about needing these refineries, here they are everywhere. I have often wanted to stop and take photos of them but if caught you will be on the terrorist list if not arrested. Beautiful work on this the details and composition are fantastic!! NJ gets a bad rap but I know of great beauty the state holds and the fact the gas prices are low and they pump it for you is a great plus!!

A powerful shot of a necessary installation. You've created beauty out of near industrial chaos here, Michelle. Gas was at one forty something here in Missouri yesterday. I almost couldn't get it through my head that my check for almost half a tank was around 14 bucks.

You captured some amazing detail for a 'drive-by' Michelle .. and I agree, NJ has it's good spots ~ at least it did have when I lived there many years ago in the little town of Rumson :)

Michelle, I am loving your beautiful industrial photos. There is a cement plant on my way home and I have always wanted to photograph it -- but it is at a very precarious location to "get to". But I've always been a huge fan of the mood photos like this convey. You did such a great job processing it.

A tip of the hat from ugly Houston where 1/3 of the US oil is refined and regular was $1.37 yesterday but NOW is the time to develope other energy sources. I love this photo Michelle! Great graphics and post procssing. A very strong industrial image and pure beauty in the eye of the oil industry!!

The detail in the structures, those dramatic clouds and your treatment are fantastic, Michelle! Apart from the security angle, I don't think I would have thought to have taken a photo of this site, and especially turn it into such a stumming image. Bev

Great capture and story behind the image. I love the Impressionist painters and think often of how fascinated they were with the industrial revolution of their day -- railroads, street lamps, etc. I think they would like pictures like this! Anyway, just a thought! Good luck with this one, Michelle.
