Nikon D200 Compact Flash problems

I just got my new Nikon D200 in the mail 2 days ago. Today I went out to shoot and I got an error message, (CHA), in the # of shots remaining indicator after taking around 25 shots. The instruction manual said that it means "this card can not be used-error accessing memory card." This is a brand new camera and card. Does anyone know why this would happen? The company I bought the camera from sent the wrong brand of compact flash card, 4 GB Dane-Elec, instead of the 6 GB Hitachi I had ordered. (I am working to get the flash card mix up corrected wit the company) Is it the cheap card causing the problem?? Any help would be appreciated.

Did you format the CF card in the D200? If not, try that (after downloading any images on it you want saved). Using the card straight out of the package or formating on the computer can cause problems.

It's possible the card is faulty. I hadn't heard of Dane-Elec, but they appear to be a large reputable co. and warrants their flash memory for 10 years. http://www.dane-elec.fr/us/.

  Thanks Jon

I wasn't aware that I needed to format the card. I am still learning the in's and out's of the camera. I'll try to figure it out tonight. If it is a formatting issue, I am curious why I was able to take about 25 shots before I got the message. I appreciate your help!

Thanks again!
Nichole

Thanks again for your help, but even after trying to format the card I still get the error message. I am going to return the card to the company and get a new one. My guess is the card is faulty.

I agree that the card is likely faulty. It's not a brand I've heard of and I would strongly recommend going with only a recognized brand of card. I have great experience with Lexar, Sandisk and Ridata. I have used these extensively and have never had a problem. (Knock on wood). I format my card before each use rather than just erasing individual images.

I've had this problems constantly within a few months of getting first dig slr, a D70. At first I thought it was the card,(which was always formatted before use) so bough a further two, Nikon approved CF cards. Eventually the CHA would start happening part way through shooting, the card being used had always been formatted.
I then, in frustration, bought a portable hard drive to allow for me to save photos and start again each time CHA came up. Nikon were no help at any point. I decided maybe it was an issue with the camera or due to deleting images from the card when in camera, I also take it out of the camera to download files via a card reader. I now have a D200, all was fine, untill the weeekend, mid shoot, CHA. Same cards, new camera, same old problem, It's costing me a fortune and earning Nikon and San disk etc money. I'm really fed up with it. Does anyone work any differently, and hence not have this problem. Do I have a bug in my cards???

I have had a D200 for nearly a year and have had zero problems (knock on wood). I use a Sandisk card as well and use it as you have. Sorry, I wish I could help.

Nancy what model cards are you using? What is their capacity? Have the cards always remained in the camera after you pulled from the package or do you sometimes store them elsewhere? If so where?

  HI,
Well this all started wusing the D70, in which I use San Disk cards, a 256MB, an Ultra 2 256MB and an Extreme 3 1GB.

I had thought my problems first came about from deleting files from the cards when in the camera, and also putting cards in a card reader in order to download images.

The same cards are now having the same problems in the D200.
When not in use the CF's are stored in their plastic cases in camera bag.
At the hospital where I also work we use the same method, but with non branded cards and there have never been any problems (D200 and S1 slr's)
A compact falsh used by a freind also went through the washing machine, fully washed and spun, and worked fine afterwards.

I'm just angry at Nikon (and san disk?) that I can be spending this amount of money and things still don't work correctly. I never open the camera back when switched on, etc I look after my stuff.
I feel I should be able to put a card in a card reader and not have any problems, that's what I've paid for isn't it?
I've just purchased yet another San Disk card (Extreme 3 2GB) and am going to strat from scratch with it in the D200.
