I have no idea and I doubt if Canon will make a public announcement on our Better Photo site. All I can say is I have owned the 20D for 9 or 10 months and I wouldn't think of trading it for a newer model. I've grown used to it and I hope to keep shooting for many years to come.
As with computers I'm growing tired of the constant model changes and so called improvements that really amount to very little.
Go buy the Camera and start shooting, you're wasting time and time is worth money.

I dont know what BP is doing but the 5D was just release a couple months ago (shipments received in october or something like that?) and from what i've been reading and hearing it's what everyone is raving about.

There have been some absolutely hilarious postings about Canon's upcoming release of the 30D, and if you need a good laugh, you should search them out. Some of the new "features" are, well, out there...

If you just want a great camera, get the 20D and don't look back.

That's hilarious, Sharon. My favorite features are the "Adams Mode", and the "Call Spock" button.

Watch for rebates. WHen Canon announces a rebate for the 20D, you can be sure a new model is on the way.

Since Nikon introduce the D50 almost six months ago, it's not unreasonable to expect some thing from Canon in the not-too-distant-future.

I haven't been around long enough to know for sure.. but if something new is coming out, it might be announced at PMA 2006 at the end of this month.

I just got my 20d with a $300 rebate ... one of the first thoughts was, "oh, I bet they're getting a new version ready." however, I am happy I bought the 20d witht he rebates :).

If your camera is good today, it will be the same 5 years from now. Nothing will have changed.

ROFLMAO - I love ideas, jobs, sex, money, and Pizza button Sharon!! Jokes aside, the 350D is being sold bundled with all sorts of things here in SA,(lens, printer, memory cards....) which makes me think there is something afoot!

Hi Everyone, I really appreciate all the feedback and it is helping me. I have an opportunity to use a digital rebel for a bit.Do ya think I should use this for a couple of months and see what happens or go for the 20d and $300 rebate. Honestly everyone I'm not normally this indecisive.

If you can get some place to put your hands on both models.. do it! I was in the same boat a few months ago, once I held the cameras.. I knew.

Good luck.. you will be satisfied and challenged with either choice!

I've had my 20D since December, and have already shot a couple thousand photos with it. If I didn't have to do silly things like earn a living, take care of my son or enjoy my time with my beautiful wife, I'd have taken 10,000.

You should check the Canon website for rebates. The rebate they just ran gave you $100 on the camera, then doubled it if you bought a qualifying lens, and trebled it if you bought a second lens, I think that rebate program ended in January.

Wait till the end of the month to see if there is an announcement at the trade show. If there is, then the 20d will go down in price and you will get a better deal on it. In this case, it is worth the short wait.

I realize that I'm responding several months after the initial posts on the 20D.
But, I was checking something out at B&H Photo and learned quite accidentally that the 20D has been discontinued and has been replaced by the 30D.

I love my 20D and do not know anything wrong with it. Why did Canon replace it with another model? It hasn't been on that market all that long!

Looking forward to a response by anyone.

Thanks!

Good question. New isn't always better for you. There are some advantages to the 30D but in my opinion not worth upgrading from the 20D. The bigger LCD is nice and the spot meter also but overall this is probably more targeted to those who are moving up from the rebel. If you love you're 20D and you are accomplishing your photographic vision, then you are good. Money is better invested in great quality lenses in my opinion.

A larger LCD would be nice and I definitely would like a spot meter over the partial metering in the 20D. However, I paid $1299 for my body alone just 2 years ago and now it is no longer on the market. Big downside. I thought the 20D would have a greater shelf life than that. It just goes to show that you shouldn't go out and plop down over $1200 on a new body, unless your professional work demands it!

I have no plans to discard my 20D for a newer, but temporary model, when the 20D was my first and likely last Digital SLR. Last because with a total knee replacement in January '07 and a total hip replacement in January '06, I cannot handle a heavier camera. No one can forsee the future, but I probably should have waited. I just kept dreaming --literally dreaming of the 20D and then decided that enough plans had been met and went out and bought it.

I agree that money is better invested in great quality lenses rather than another new body.

Thanks for your feedback, Barry.

  Hello everyone,
I did get the 30D about 1 month after I posted this question and I love it. Used it a ton on weddings and was pleased with its performance. I just purchased the 5D about 3 weeks ago and have had it only for a week and only used it on one job so far so I'm really looking forward to appreciating the upgrade!

I have the dollars for the 5D, but don't want a heavier camera. My 20D is more than adequate for my current ability.

When I cannot do what my mind and body is capable of achieving with my 20D, then perhaps, I'll buying another model.

I just didn't understand why Canon needed an upgrade when the 20D just came out two years ago.

I understand there will always to be an upgrade as long as there is competition between manufacturers for the buyers that need to have the latest model, even when they cannot achieve everything possible with what they have.

For me, technique needs improvement and I definitely need to learn digital darkroom.

I think that Barry and Carlton have made excellent points.

When manufacturers release new camera models, like the 30D replacing the 20D, it doesn't mean that current owners of the older model need to upgrade. The new model isn't necessarily aimed at you. They keep releasing new models because most people shopping for a new camera are more likely to buy one that was recently released, and less likely to buy one that was released two years ago. Anyone that replaced their 20D with a 30D wasted their money, in my opinion. There weren't enough differences to justify buying a new camera.

That's why I couldn't justify replacing my Rebel 300D with a Rebel XT, 20D, or 30D. I knew I wouldn't see much difference going from 6.3MP to 8MP, and the other features that interested me, like buffer size, were better but not enough better to be worth the large expense.

So I waited until the Rebel XTi (400D) to upgrade. Going from 6.3MP to 10MP is a big difference. Larger LCD, better controls, larger buffer, sensor cleaning, and the list goes on. So I got 3-1/2 years out of the Rebel, then for under $700, replaced it with a much, much better camera.

I don't see spending that kind of money for something that's just a little better. And before anyone says that in spite of the 8MP vs. 10MP, the 30D is a better camera than the 400D, I disagree. There is nothing that the 30D has that justifies my spending more for it instead of the 400D. I think the 10MP sensor with the dust cleaning feature is a big improvement.

That's why I think the next Canon model that will be released (maybe the 40D?) will be very similar to the 30D, but with the 10MP self-cleaning sensor from the 400D. I don't know what other features they can throw in to sweeten the deal. Anyone have any ideas?

I realize this is an old thread, but since Chris responded on it recently, I will use this instead of starting a new one! ;-)

I am still shooting with a 10D. I loved the camera when I got it new, and I still love it.

I admit, I was annoyed when the 20D came out, probably less than a year after I had bought the 10D, but it wasn’t enough of an upgrade to entice me to drop another $1500. Not that I am rolling in money, but back then, it was much tighter.

Then came the 30D, which was barely a step up from the 20D, and by some reviewers’ opinions, not as good a camera all around. Again, not enough of an upgrade to get me to bite.

In the meantime, the DRebels were also being released. The rebel really didn’t hold much appeal to me, mostly because of the “consumer build.” My 10D has taken some abuse that I don’t think the DRebels would have survived (could be wrong, since I have never owned one!)

Then came that wondrous 5D! 12+ MP full frame sensor for under $3500!! Then I really looked at the specs. 3 fps, 1/200 shutter sync speed, 9 AF points (nice, but not overly impressive for the price), no weather proofing… Again, nothing about this camera, other than the sensor, jumped out at me as having reached the price vs feature level that would get me to drop the money, especially $3000+ (at the time).

The XTi actually got me excited, because it was getting there. Unfortunately, the features were on a “consumer build” camera. I know that sounds snobbish, but the feel and build of a camera are important to me.

The 1D Mark III got me jumping out of my seat. 10 MP APS-H “1.3 crop” sensor (I don’t need a full frame, at 1.3, it is much wider than the 1.6 of the 10D), 14 bit capture, 19 AF points with 24 assist, incredible metering, and a whopping 10 fps! Of course, $4500 is out of my “sure, why not” price range. For me to get this camera, it would take some time and some creative finances. Then the bad news… The 1D Mark III has focus problems. Granted, it is limited to action in bright daylight, and that would rarely affect me, but disappointing none the less.

Oh, but Canon wasn’t done. On the heals of the 1D Mark III release came the 1Ds Mark III, with its monster 21MP FF sensor. Looking over the rest of the specs, though, I feel that all around the 1D Mark III was still the better overall camera, at least for me. I have no real life use for a 21 MP sensor. And I don’t have $8000…

Then, after all this, quietly comes the 40D release. This is probably the camera that will finally separate me from my money. At $1300 ($200 less than I paid for the 10D) it is in my price range. And, it has got the features to price that I think make it worthwhile. The 10MP Digic III sensor with anti dust (even though it is 1.6, that matches the 10D, so I am used to it, and I already have the wide angle lenses to compensate). 6+ fps (which is a number that I like). While it keeps many of the same specs of the 30D (auto focus, metering, ISO, shutter speeds…), for the first time the prosumer line has weather resistance construction. I will be keeping my eye on the reviews, and if everything looks good, this might be the camera I am shooting after the first of the year.

Ok, no one has actually read this far, so I will stop my self indulgent blog post! ;-)

5D if your into full frame landscape stuff. The 40d does sound nice until they release the 50D in a couple more months.
Myself, I am holding out for the eleventy billion D that will be out in 2012.

The prosumer EOS cameras seem to be on an 18 month release schedule, so expect the 50D in about a year and a half. Will there be decent upgrades? Possibly, but I am thinking that 10 MP will probably be the standard sensor size for a while in prosumer and consumer (rebel) bodies. Who knows...

I guess my point is that when buying a digital SLR, go for what is the best fit for you at the time, and then don't look back (or forward). Shoot with it until the limitations out way the benefits of a new camera. The 10D has an expected shutter life of 50,000, and while I still have some time, I am now on the back end of the camera's life, so I am now ready to seriously start thinking of replacing it. I might not have a year and a half, so the 40D becomes appealing. I might yet wait and see if they can fix the focus issues on the Mark III, and work the budget to get that instead. We'll see....

  David,

That is the best advice I've read.

There will always be another upgrade, and there is no perfect camera.

Buying what is best for you at the time is great advice. This is because you can always improve on your technique to allow you to go beyond the camera. No camera for any amount of money can allow you to capture the light if you don't have the technique.

Buy what's best for you and learn everything you can about technique first, prior to upgrading to the next model. Otherwise you'll be throwing money down a black hole.
