Photography Question

Marina Brisco

Hurt back

Ok, this is a strange question. I am a digital photographer about to do a wedding in a week. The thing is, I pulled my back this week and while it is so much better and will be fine for the wedding day (hopefully 100%), I am going to allow my teenage daughter to help carry my equipment and assist me with my gear on that day. An assistant if you will. I told my bride and she is just fine with it. She said whatever you need is fine with me. (they have met) I told her that my daughter is into photography as well and that she is very mature for her age. All of which is true. Anyway, my conscience is bothering because I feel I should tell my bride I hurt my back and that is the main reason for my daughter to come with me. I just don't want the bride to freak out or worry. Should I leave well enough alone? It kills me because I feel like I am being dishonest with her. What do you think?

The only way that I could possibly see that you are being dishonest is if you have any feeling at all that your performance may be affected. If you believe that you (and your back) will be fine and you will be able to meet the obligations of taking the photos - Leave it alone!

On the other hand, if there is a question about your ability to deliver - you owe it to the bride to give her the info.

My 2 copper monetary bits... :-)

Thank you so much for your response John. I was feeling so guilty. Not because I felt I was unable to do the job and do it well, I just felt that I should be completely honest as to why I would bring my daughter/assistant. I never want to appear unprofessional. Thank you again. Your answer makes me feel much better.

Many professionals brought assistants with them. They need assistants to hold the second light, reflector, etc. They need assistants to load the film and batteries, line up the guests, checking the bride's hair and gown are in perfect shape. And the most important role is to take candid pictures of the guests to compliment your bride and groom's picture. You should feel guilty only if you cannot deliver the photos to the bride. Cheers.

Thank you Andy. I will leave well enough alone and allow my daughter to assist. She is actually looking forward to it. :)

Thanks!

I might also add that when at the wedding, you should treat your daughter as an assistant (like you would treat someone that works for you). It might also be good to offer her a wage.

Good luck!

Thanks John. I was actually trying to decide how much to pay her last night. :) Definitely an incentive for her and helps me out. Thanks again.
