Slaved Flash

Hi, has anyone ever used a Canon Elan II with slaved flash? I have been told at the camera shop that it will not work because the preflash that the Canon fires will prematurely fire the slaves. Is this true? Is there any way to use multiple lights triggered by slaves?

The built-in flash on the Elan II does not preflash, but it does have a red-eye-reduction function that you'll want to switch off if using slaves.

The preflash works with the FE-lock when the Elan II is used with EX model speedlights. This can be switched off with the 550EX, I don't know whether the 380EX allows this feature to be cancelled. The EZ speedlights do not preflash.

  Hi Jon,
Thanks for the response. The Elan II when coupled with the 380EX does in fact fire a preflash on every exposure. Canons book "Flash Work" describes the E-TTL auto flash system and step #2 says that a preflash is fired.
The FE lock mode you speak of merely allows you to fire the preflash without tripping the shutter. It's the same preflash that fires on every shot.
On the other hand I guess I could trip the slave lights with the built in flash. It never really occurred to me that it worked differently from the 380 EX.
Again, thanks for your time. Have a good day.
Jeff
