Shooting outside in bright light

When shooting outside in bright light, I keep the sun at my back as I shoot my subject. However, all people shots seem to be too bright, as if there is too much light. Colors are too washed out. Flash is set at "Auto", and I don't think it fires in these situations. How can I get these shots to come out better? Not shoot in bright sunlight?

Shooting photos with direct bright sunlight is not high on my list of good conditions. I'd suggest using open shade (outdoors, but shooting in the shade) as much better conditions.

Probably overexposed everthing cause you really didn't need the flash.
