For "detailed close-ups of various objects" a fixed focal length macro lens is more appropriate than a zoom lens. Macro lenses focus close enough to produce a life-sized image on the film frame. Very cheap (~$140), suspect build quality, but with pretty sharp optics is the Vivitar 100mm f/3.5 Macro. Made by Cosina, it is also available under the Phoenix and Promaster brands. Better, but more expensive ($380-$580) are the Sigma 105 f/2.8 EX Macro, Tamron SP 90mm f/2.8 Macro, and Nikon 105 f/2.8D Macro. The 90mm to 105mm focal length and relatively fast f/2.8 maximum aperture of these lenses make them suitable also for traditional head and shoulder portraits. Alternatively, Tamron and Sigma make 70-300 f/4-5.6 "macro" zooms. These focus normally to about 1.5m, but also have a macro focus mode that allows focusing as close as 1m giving 1/2 life size image on film. These are pretty economical, ranging from $150 to $220.
