Digital Storage I am new to the digital world. I have just purchased the Canon Digital Rebel and I am planning a trip to Kenya this summer. I need some good ideas for digital storage on my trip. I am on a tight budget so I want to get the most for my dollar.Any suggestions?

How long is your trip? I have a Digital Rebel also... I'm leaving for a 2-week trip to Asia this weekend and just bought a 1 GB CF card. It was really pricey ($230), but I do NOT want to run out of room-- I'm the type who would almost cry over a missed photo. I'm considering selling it on eBay when I get back to recoup my money if I don't think I'll need it anymore. I don't know if there's really a good way of getting around how much you have to pay for memory (no pun intended! ;))-- the more you want, the more you have to pay! Nancy

Shawna, I just bought the Digital Rebel and love it. I'm on 30 days vacation with my family and use a 512mb card for storage in the camera (about 140 pics on highest setting besides RAW), I also have my Dell Laptop with me. I bought a card reader and download to my laptop once or sometimes twice a day. Before I leave I will burn CD's of all the pics for my parents and sisters. Having the ability to download and delete what you do not want is THE BOMB!!! The card reader I bought also reads my wifes Olympus smartmedia card. Just a thought. Good Luck!!!

Hi Shawna, If you are going to Kenya, your biggest enemy will be the following: - Dust. A friend of mine recently took a trip to Africa and his solution was to bring a digital hard drive. Check out the archos or the mad trax. They allow you to copy your CF card to the device's internal hard drive and the unit has it's own internal battery. I'd avoid the CF->CD portable burners since a failed burn will mean lost images. Plus, dusty and rough conditions in Kenya will almost guarantee the malfunction of the CD burner. If you have a laptop, that would be a viable portable storage option. Just pick up a USB or FW CF card reader or PCCARD adapter for your CF card, then you can use your laptop to store your pics and the laptop's burner to burn backups. Bring spare batteries that are fully charged. The Rebel usees custom batteries. I would suggest having one in the camera and at least 2 spare batteries that are fully charged. My mobile photography setup: - Minolta Dimage A1 digital camera (5MP) You will also want to bring a cleaning kit for your camera if you plan on swapping lenses as well as a "clean bag" to do the lens changing or cleaning in. Good luck and have fun in Kenya! Wing Wong
