How big can I go? Hi, I am currently shooting my kids with my Maxxum/Dynax 9 SLR. I typically used NPH 200 or 400. My Dad has always told me that I can enlarge no bigger than 8x10 without loosing quality ( he has a medium format camera). Can I go 11x14 with this camera and if so, will it be grainy? Thank you, Tonya

When everyone decided to buy a 35mm camera most mfr's started doing a lot of improving on their lenses. Resut is that most modern 35mm cameras will actualy produce better 11X14's than medium format due to the better quality lenses, above that there is some deterioration but most people are happy with even 16X20's, especialy with the finer grain films. For my 20X30's I go with medium format.

With today's film technologies, an 11x14 is definately do-able with ASA 200,...provided the original is sharp and properly exposed. Any thing larger than that size will likely be grainy. At ASA 400,...I have to go along with your dad!

Tom, It is theoretically possible to create an 11x14 print from a 35mm negative that is equal in quality to an 11x14 print from a MF camera. However, I would doubt that an 11x14 from my 6x7 would be less quality than an 11x14 from my 35mm. That's a bit of a stretch, don't you think?

Easy. If you want an optical enlargement a lab should be able to produce an 11x14 from a 100 asa film negative with very hard to detect grain. Personally, I scan into the scanner 35mm slides or negatives and using genuine fractels have printed super b(13x19) that look fabulous! No grain detected!High end printer and good paper are essential. Good luck! Dave

a 20x30 from 200 would be fine. from 400 you'll see grain if you are viewing it close, but I wouldn't say that it's going to be grainy. Like they said before, if it's just a plain good picture up to 400 films are very good at enlarging nowadays. Especially if it's an image that fills the frame. When it's on the wall, at that size it would like fine.
