shooting reflections on glass

I need to shoot a reflection of a kid on glass for a book cover I'm designing... any tips? I've been all over the web - no luck anywhere else.

  Hi Tracey,
Some suggestions:

(1) Use caution in shooting a glass reflection. There will be a reflection from each surface of the glass, front and back. If the reflection from the back surface is strong enough, you will get a ghost image of it also. Specifically look for this when setting up. (2) and (3) will reduce the risk of this.

(2) Make the background behind the glass as dark as possible, a neutral color, and as uncluttered as possible.

(3) Try to get a high imbalance between light levels on the two sides of the glass. You want as little light coming from behind the glass as possible, and a much higher illumination on your subject. Don't illuminate the glass itself (if possible) but illuminate the subject instead. This will increase the luminance and contrast in the glass reflection you are trying to capture.

Good luck with your book cover.

  Tracey,
This one may require some setup and experimentation. Ensure the background behind the glass is dark and it should be a uniform color. This will increase the prominence of the reflection. It doesn't have to be black, but anything other than black or gray will tint the reflection with that color.

The major problem with reflection from glass is ghosting caused by a double reflection, the first from the front surface and the second from the rear surface. I don't know how to cure this completely. It results from the index of refraction difference between air and glass. You will *always* get a reflection from the interface (in this case air-glass both in front and behind the glass); it's a matter of whether or not it's enough to show up in the image.
