Faster FPS with Flash on Digital

Camera is Fuji S602X Pro 3.2/6 MP
Problem
I always use hi MP = approx 5 MP...even at this level, WITHOUT flash, FPS is pretty fast.
HOWEVER if I use built in camera flash FPS is grindingly slow - like 15+ secs between shots!!!
IDEA - and COMMENTS PLEASE
SO I COULD use offcamera flash, i.e. separately powered flash on hot shot.
My off camera flash is a Vivitar 2000 with tilting head...with it's own battery pack.
MY CONCERN
Is this flash going to be too strong for indoor casual use? I haven't had a chance to practice yet - and have got a major kids birthday party/indoors coming up this weekend. I am leary about shooting natural light...anyway the flash keeps the speed fast...and with a bunch of hyper kids speed is kinda essential.
COMMENTS PLEASE - especially re strength of flash....

  Just a guess, but suspect that the fps (frames per second?) slows when using the built-in flash is because the camera won't fire the next shot until the flash is charged.

You'll have similar problems with the Vivitar 2000, it'll take a couple (or more) seconds for it to recycle after each shot. However, the camera will go ahead and shoot even if the flash is not ready. In that case your first shot will get proper flash exposure, but the subsequent shots won't.

The Vivitar 2000 is not too powerful to use inside. You do have to be aware of flash to subject distance and use smaller aperture when shooting closeup. Make sure your ISO and aperture settings on the camera and flash are consistent.

Practice before hand. That's one of the advantages of a digital camera - no "wasted" film experimenting and no wait for developing/printing.

  Here's Liz of original query.
Yes I did play practice. Yes I matched ISO and distances when using Vivitar.
TIMING..not a huge difference...but certainly significant enough to make the Vivitar flash very desirable...camera gets a bit heavy.
TIMING
Using the rough and ready "one-and-two-and-three-and four" count system, "Power Up" time shooting all at 200 ISO, 6 MP.
* NO FLASH = 5 to 6 count
* On Camera FLASH = 8 to 9 count
* Vivitar FLASH = 5 to 6 count
ACTUALLY the Vivitar powers up in a 4 count...faster than the camera!!

Results great - super colour.

EXTRA QUESTION
What about White Balance in scenario with Vivitar on? Should I do it with flash operational??
