taking digital action shots under gymnasium lights HELP! I have this great camera - but need to know how to set it for really great fast action shots of the boys in freestyle wrestling. These are taken from just far enough away that the flash doesn't work very well, and under gym lights.

you need to use a high iso like 400 or 800 and a large apeture at least f/5.6 or faster f/2.8 would be better and you should costume white balance for the lighting inside the gym.or you could buy a better flash unit.

Most gymnasiums are lit with mercury vapor lights - just absolutely awful for photography. None of your pre-set white balances will work that well. Read your instruction manual on how to set up a custom white balance, then perform this function AT THE GYM just prior to photographing. You will also need to set your ISO fairly high, and the resulting pictures may display some noise in the shadows. Ideally, you need to find the lowest ISO you can work with in the gym's lighting in order to keep noise to a minimum. Michael H. Cothran
