How to Shoot Night Pictures

I've always wanted to know how to shoot pictures at night, but I really don't know what to do. I would appreciate if you'd let me know. Thank you.

It is just like taking normal pictures - except that it requires a longer exposure. You will need a tripod, a camera that can do long exposures, and a shutter release (mechanical, electrical or wireless; you may not need the shutter release if your camera has a self-timer). Some of the automatic-everything point and shoot cameras may not be able to do a long exposure. Let us know what kind of camera (brand and model) that you have, and we can go from there. Hope this helps.

Susan - what type of things are you wanting to shoot at night? There is a difference between shooting city lights and landscapes at night. Also, do you shoot digital or film? If film, you should generally use a tungsten film - I prefer Fuji Tungsten 64. The tungsten film helps things look "cooler" and it balances some of the orange you get from the sodium vapor lights that are almost everywhere. With film, you have to be concerned about reciprocity failure - the longer the exposure, the less sensitive the film is so you have to compensate by making the exposure longer than you expect. There is a lot of trial and error involved in night photography so be prepared to bracket, especially with film. Most digital cameras cannot handle really long exposures - my Canon D60 is good to about 5 minutes but then it gets too noisy. Most people who shoot digital at night do shorter exposures and then "stack" them with programs you can find to do it.

Twilight - the 15-30 minutes before sunrise and 15-30 minutes after sunset are great times to be out - the sky has a very pretty blue color.

If you look on my deluxe web site, you'll see a ton of night photos and you'll also see some links to other night photography web sites. Have a look and give us some more details so we can help you more. Good luck!!
