Freezing a Bullet in Flight

I am working on a project which requires an image of a bullet piercing an object. I have a general idea of how it's done, but I was wondering if anyone has acomplished this, and could upload examples of images and the equipment, settings,...etc. they used.
My equipment will consist of a Nikon FM2, Provia 100 slide film, Vivitar 285HV Flash, Quantum Sound Trigger,...and a .22 rifle.
If possible, I would like to use ambient light only, with a fast shutter speed (by pushing the film).
Any advice on this project is appreciated.

  Hi Bob.
Long, long ago when I was much younger I attempted to photograph an airgun pellet passing through an apple (actually I had to use a softer fruit [strawberry], my airgun did not have the oomph to pass through an apple). I was, of course attracted by the incredible shots you sometimes see published, of the bullet emerging from the object, frozen in space..... superb.

Enter the real world :-)

Do some simple calculations involving your shell muzzle velocity and acceptble movement of the bullet during the exposure and the distance you have the camera from the object of interest (apple?).

Try this article :- http://www.rit.edu/~andpph/text-agfa-1280-hs.html

There are others on the same site, could give you some ideas.

Let us all know how you get on.

Cheers

Thanks Dave, for your help and for the article link.
It seems like it won't be possible to freeze the bullet with my equipment limitations, but I should be able to freeze the "damage" it causes, and catch the speeding shell as a blur.
I will use that goal as my objective.

Afterwards, I will post the results of any "keepers".

Thanks again,
Bob

Well,...I've made two trips to a remote region near my home, to try a few "test runs" on this project, and have concluded that it's not possible to freeze a bullet...(at least not with my equipment).
I did however, have fun afterwards...cleaning apple bits and egg gook off my lenses and gear, but that's another story.

The enclosed is a "cheated" version, where I used a double-exposure. I shot the bullet first in my studio, resting on a plate of glass against a black background,...then, drove to the woods with the rifle to get the "damage" recorded on the other side of the frame.
There are obvious flaws in this attempt, and I would appreciate any advice on how I could improve upon it.
(Note: I need a FILM image...can't use any digital manipulation.)
