There is a great web site called webslr.com that breaks down how to use a SLR camera. It costs 18.00 for a year and 6.00 to renew, but for 18.00 you get so much information. The site acts like a working camera. It shows several pictures and when you change the f/stop or shutter speeds it shows what happens to the pictures. There is a tutorial lesson that goes with it. I thought it was deffinetly worth the money! It keeps it pretty simple and easy to follow. It lets you try out how it works, a limited trial, so you can decide if it is right for what you want to learn. Good luck!

Or you could just ask somebody. How old and what kind of camera is it? Old cameras had a seperate dial on top of the camera with all the shutter speeds on it to change shutter speeds. And the aperture was changed on the lens with the aperture ring.
Newer cameras have a dial on top of the camera by the shutter release button that usually changes the shutter speed. And a dial on the back that changes the aperture. And it may have a settable function that lets you reverse what the dials change.
