Arena Exposure OK - I need a strategy for how to deal with these problems. I have a Nikon Coopix 5700. This winter I was trying to shoot pictures in an arena under some kind of flourescent lighting. If I tried to shoot without the flash, the exposure was so long that I couldn't get a non-blurry shot. If I used the flash, the range was insufficient and I ended up with a very dark shot (but at least it was sharply focused). I HAD been using these photos, lightening them in Photoshop Elements and then removing the noise (and there was a lot of it). My camera does not have preprogrammed exposures for specialty situations like a lot of other camera. What can I do to make this work?

Set the ISO to 400 or 800 (and spend time removing the noise) and use Aperture priority at the largest aperture. A high power accesory flash might get you enough range, otherwise get better seats closer to the action. ;-) You are limited with your current camera by a lense with maximum aperture of f/4.2 at the telephoto end, and highest ISO of only 800 (with lots of noise). With a digital (or film) SLR you'd be able to use larger aperture lenses and faster ISO setting (film) with less noise (grain).
