How to shoot sunbeams coming through cloudy skies This weekend I had the chance to shoot some beautiful sunbeams peaking through the cloudy skies after a storm went through. I thought I would have some great beam shots but when I got my pictures back, you couldn't even tell there were any beams, they were all washed out. this happens all the time, can you give me some advice on this. I'm shooting asa 100 speed film through a twenty year old canon A-1, Thanks, Frank Goodin.

The "wash-out" was probably due to your metering off the clouds. This would cause the brighter parts of the sky...including the light beams, to over-expose. Better results can be achieved by metering off the brightest part of the sky..(without the sun in the frame.) It's always wise to bracket a half-stop both ways to make sure.
