do I need a tax id # to start a business I am starting a studio out of my home. Do I need to take steps for it to be a legal business? A friend told me that while starting out I don't need to do anything because IRS would consider it as a "hobby" for the first three years of business. So if I don't have a tax id #, would it be illegal for me to advertise and use a name for my business? Also, my husband farms and has a tax # , I have been told that I might be able to use it in order to get frames, etc. at wholesale. I hope you can offer some advice! Tammy

You can use your SS# for a Tax ID - unless you want to incorporate....

You might want to check with your county clerk office too. In Cook County, IL I had to register with the assumed names unit, to legally use the name of my business.

In some places you don't need to go the facticious business route if you use your name in the busiess, i.e., bill smith enterprises.... hth

You'll still need a business license though...
