shutter will not release

I was just given a canon ae1. However, after I press the shutter release button the shutter remains open until I release the button. If I hold the release down over one second or so, the shutter sticks open and will remain so until I press the batery check button. This occurs on any shutter setting (not only when the shutter setting is in the "b" position. How odd? I am lost, can someone please help me? Thank you in advance!

  two guesses

(a) The shutter of the ae-1 is electronicly controlled. Have you tried testing/replacing the battery?

(b) The foam/rubber/fabric components inside the camera have a tendency to deteriorate over 20-30 years and form a goo that could be making the shutter stick. Have it checked/cleaned by a professional.
