Aperture

Thank you for replying to my question

I have another question about aperture and that is:

If I am taking a photo of a flower say and I want to take a clear photo I would set the aperture to f5.6 but what if I need to let in quite a lot of light - then I should set it to f22?

Also if I was taking a photo of a landscape in bright sunlight then I would need to use f22 to get everything in focus but also f5.6 because I don't want it to be overexposed. So what should I do?

Thank You

Philip Raggett

Oh Gee Philip I think you got aperture confused. The SMALLER the number, the WIDER aperture, the MORE light. The LARGER the number, the NARROWER the aperture, and hence LESS light. You would usually use aperture to control depth of field. The WIDER the aperture the NARROWER the depth of field (i.e. less is in focus). And you usually just balance the aperture with your shutter speed. I suggest reading up some more on aperture. This site has some good bits and also check: http://www.photoalley.com

  Hi Phillip,
You are touching on some of the most frustrating aspects of photography: when you need one setting for a particular effect but are restricted to its opposite setting for another reason.

In addition to this site (and I will aim to get much more on the subject in the near future) and the site that Romen mentioned, I would also check out WebSLR.com
