selective focus

Good day everyone!! I use a Toshiba 4300 Digital camera. I am in the very early phases of learning photograpy. but I am having big trouble with selective focus. I have tried different aperatures, different focuses, etc. everything comes in complete focus. I have found myself blurring my backgrounds in editing softwares but I want to learn hoe to do it. this is supposadly and easy thing to do, why am I having so much trouble with it? thanks for any input!!
hugs
Michelle

Those kind of cameras with tiny sensors have a comparatively tiny apeture and lens. So even wide open you have depth of field that would be like f/11 on a slr camera. So you always get large focus areas.
