If I want to take panoramic with my manual camera, would I use a wide angle lens or would I need to buy a new camera?

I'm assuming that you're using a 35mm camera for these shots, and you have basically three choices for really good panorama.

1) You could buy a wide angle lens (35mm and less) but if you look around, these are quite expensive. Be prepared to spend at least $600. The biggest problem with this is that all film has a grain to it, and cropping a 35mm frame down to a panoramic print will generally come out grainy even with 100ASA film.

2) With a wide angle lens, there will tend to be a little distortion on the outside edges. So the easiest way to accomplish this feat is to simply back up. Get a ladder or shoot from a window or rooftop with the 50mm lens you already have. However, you still have to crop the print and the problems with the film still exist.

3) The best way to accomplish this feat, however, is to buy a medium format camera that has a special insert to accommodate 35mm film as well as 120 and 220. When you use 35mm film in one of these cameras, it's already preset to expose the shot in panoramic format, so you can use the full frame amount to print from. More film means less grain. You'll still have to back up to get in the full shot, but the picture plane is much better. Now if you add this format camera with a wide angle lens, you'll start shooting some really nice looking panoramic scenes. If you're trying to become a serious photographer, the investment of $1000 or so into a really great system to begin with is worth it.
