What lens to use for a group shot? Hello, I was wondering if anyone could tell me what lens would be best to shot a large group shot. This is the first time I have done this, I have a Canon EF 24-85F3.5-4.5 USM. However, I am going to overseas to Dallas, TX next month on business and thought I would pick up some equipment (live in Belgium). I was thinking of ultra wide angel but I thought it might distort the image. Thanks in advance for you assitance Em

A medium wide-angle, in the 35 mm range, would probably work best without any distortion on the edges. Whichever lens you use, try to position the subjects in the center of the frame, as much as possible, to optimize lens sharpness.

I second Bob here. Any photographer needs one or more prime lenses, to use in situations where sharpness and lack of distortion are important. For this purpose, you have the Canon 35 f1.4 or f2, or the 28 f2.8 or 1.8. Canon makes 2 of each prime focal length, a cheaper one for most of us who need a decent lens, and an expensive one of uncompromised quality for folks who make their living with this stuff. Canon has always made a very good 24mm f2.8. Keeping the people away from the frame edge is good advice, still, even with prime lenses.

I'd say you have a good lens for the job. Just try and keep your focal length as close to normal as possible (50mm or so) to avoid linear curving on the edges of your photographs. Thanks
