Showing my work in local Galleries

I have been contemplating selling photographs for about a year now but I don't know how to start.
How can I get my foot in the door at a gallery to sell my art? Do I have to pay anything? Do you know of any local galleries in Boston Area?

Can I sell my photos street-side or do I need to have some kind of permit for this? Help please, Thank you.

I had two shows last year, and just walked in and asked if I could display my work-one place was a hair salon owned by a photographer and she featured photos by unknown artists. the other place was in a cafe close to me,where they also showed works by people just starting out.I was in there for lunch, had some of my work and asked the owner if he would let me show it.He wanted 13 photos for three months.Great exposure and a chance for me to get started.Check your local neighborhood restaurants, cafes, coffee houses about showing your work. can't lose anything by asking. good luck!

I may not have asked but that's a great idea! In fact I already know a coffee shop that shows and sell photographs and paintings.

Do you have a local art league? We do. When I started looking at places to hang/sell my photos I found they contract to hang photos all around town and decide who goes up.
