Scanning Slides I was in the army and stationed in Germany back in the 70s. I took many pictures with slide film because the cost was cheaper than regular color film. My slide projector broke years ago. I would like to find an inexpensive way to convert some of my slides to prints. Any photo shop that does this is way too expensive. I have sent some slides to cheaper places, like Seattle Film works, and the scanned slides turned out terrible. I have about 1500 slides that I would like to have scanned and printed to color prints before they lose their quality. I have a scanner with a transparency adaptor. Every scan seems to make the picture blurry. Do these slide scanners do a very good job, like the Minolta Dimage Scan Dual IV Film & Slide Scanner? They cost under $300, so it would be worth it if the quality is decent. I emailed a guy about buying one. He said that I also have to buy a film adaptor for $140 in order to use the scanner. Anyway, what's your opinion on the quality of these scanners that are set up for transparency's?

I have checked with B&H and Adorama. The Minolta scanner does come with a 35mm film holder and a slide holder. There is an optional APS film holder but you do not need it in this case. If the sales guy insisted that you have to buy the $140 adaptor, go somewhere else. The price of the film scanner came down dramatically. From what I read from the magazines and their spec, this is a superb prosumer scanner for that little amount of money. It is even more advanced than my Nikon CoolScan IV ED I bought 2 years ago that cost more than triple the price. It is absolutely better than the flatbed scanner. Hope this helps.

Thanks you very much for the help. I will go somewhere else. This guy was probably trying to make an extra buck off of me.

HI Jack; I am also considering buying the Minolta Dimage scan dual IV to do high quality film and slide scanning. I have seen poor reviews and great reviews (?) I would like to know if you purchased it and if so, what are your comments on the quality?? thanks

Hi Mary Ann, I had a daughter get married last month. I haven't had the extra money to buy the scanner yet. My last wedding bill is the photographer. I will get one as soon as I pay her. Probably next month (July)I'll get one. I've got to get these slides scanned before they degrade.

I might just beat you to it. I am chomping at the bit trying to decide, it can always be returned. I saw it today on Amazon.com for $264. Adorama is selling it, they seem to have a good reputation. There are some negative reviews on there re: no tech support, and other quirks. So- maybe I will be letting you know how it works! :) take care

I just received my Minolta Dimage Scan Dual IV yesterday and love it! I have already scanned in a few slides and negatives incl. b&w, and it did a great job. My prints came out great. The only issue I find is the dust and other marks on the slides do show after using the 'Dust Brush'. But I resolved that with the Dust and Scratch Filter in Photoshop. That was only with my old slides (from 1980's) so they had some wear and tear. but my newer slides came out excellent! Didn't even need any dust filter to touch them up. Bought it at Amazon.com for $285 (with a $50 promotional certificate to use with future purchases) Take care- MaryAnn
