Cannon AE-1, what's your opinion?

Hi,

I just bought an older Cannon AE-1 manual camera. I was trying to buy a pentax but they were a bit too much for me off ebay and I found this one for a steal.

I really like the pentax, K1000 but I'm wondering if anyone out there has used this camera and what your opinion is on it.

thanks for your time.

Chris

  Hi Chris

The K1000 is a great starter camera - but one must be sure that the light meter is working appropriately. They can be repaired and when in working order - I can't think of a better first camera. The AE-1 isn't bad either. regardless what ever used camera you buy you should have it cleaned and calibrated. I learned this the hard way when I first started. All my images were a stop off. Good Luck.

I evaluate used cameras with a 24-shot roll of slide film. Set the ISO speed correctly and shoot scenes that are fairly evenly lighted. If the slides have a nice range of tones and colors, if they render the scene about as you saw it, then your meter is OK. Why slide film? If your metering is off, you'll see it. A shot will be either too bright or too dark. What you shot is what ya got. With color prints, the automated printer will cover for your mistakes (to a point).
BTW, go here:

to get your AE-1's manual.

I agree with the earlier statements and add that the pentax k1000 is still a very well selling camera after 20+ yrs. That shud tell you something. I bought mine in 1982 and am still using it. What was the price maybe I can make you a better deal... With 4 medium formats,
12 35mm and 1 digital, my wife says I can't buy any more camera equipmen untill I get rid of some that I have.

You got some good advice above on checking to make sure the camera is in working order. I used to have an AE-1 and would still have it today and use it alot, but my husband dropped in the the river on a canoe trip!
I was a very inexperienced photographer when I bought the AE-1 20 years ago, but was able to learn how to use the manual feature of it very easily. I think you made a good choice.
