shotting sports photography

I have recently purchased a new nikon slr I have not used one for about 10 years so I am a bit rusty. I wanted to shot some photos of my sons basketball game I used the sports mode, 800 speed film and AFmode. Unfortunaly when I picked up my photos they are full of swirled images. the exposure is good the color is good but all movement is blurred. Any ideAS AS TO What I Did wrong?

It would have been wiser to have put the camera to program (P) mode and with the camera's shiftable program, you would've made shutter speed necessary adjustments...say 1/250, 1/500 etc. OR were you swinging the camera while taking the pictures ( thus the pictures looked 'swirled')? Another thing, 800 ISO can capture sports action SANS FLASH and has been tested by the pros! Last, Probably using the manual mode would have captured the hoops action simply by adjusting shutter speed/aperture combinations---which are not that difficult with the fast film you put inside your camera!

800 can stop action without flash only if there's enough ambient light to do so. And since you have swirls, which is the same as blurred, there isn't enough light to do so without flash. Especially if this is in a high school gym. Your sports mode just uses the fastest shutter speed that the amount of light and the aperture of your camera will allow. So you'll have to use a flash with the cameras fastest sync speed that you can use.
