Let's go with Ansel Adams for inventing it. I know he used it. Use a scale of 1-10 for different shades, with the middle being neutral, mid-tone, 18% grey. Expose for this when shooting and printing.

Ansel believed that using his zone system you could create an image that contained all the spectral elements. exposing not only for the shadows but the highlights as well, giving you an image that contained all the information about the scene being photographed. (f/1.0 - f/22)

Ansel Adams---It is the process of exposing for the shadows (zones 1,2,3) and developing for the highlights (zones 7,8,9). Exposure gives you density and development gives you contrast. When you find the proper exposure and development time, your negatives will be a joy to print.
