Photography Question

35mm Lens rental

I'm interested in purchasing some "Big Glass" Although I have not yet decided on what exact lens to buy (I'm looking at the Canon 500mm f/4.0, 300mm f/2.8 with a teleconverter or 2 or possibly a sigma 120-300mm also coupled with teleconverter) I have been told to try and rent a lens for a day or so to try it out before making such a large purchase. Where can I find places that might rent these high end telephotos? Also any advice on which lens I should lean towards would be helpfull. I plan on using it for wildlife & nature photography, coupled with my Canon Elan 7 (and tripod of course).

Brad, first, you can call around in your area and find a professional camera store that might rent gear. Bigger cities have several, usually, smaller towns might or might not have anything. As to which lens to 'lean towards', for fixed focal lengths, you'd have more flexibility with the 300mm f2.8 and the 1.4 and 2x teleconverters. I own a 500 f4 and while I love it, it has its limitations, one of which is weight and size. It has it's own camera bag! Canon's 100-400 IS lens is a great lens, too. While it is not the 'fast glass' of a 2.8, it offers you the range for a lot of wildlife situations; I use it for my photographs of whales and orcas in southeast alaska; you never know how close they might come to the boat and if I have the 500mm on, they are usually too close! Sigma's 120-300mm would be good, too, but remember that with these slower lenses, the teleconverters will take even more light away from you.

It's all a compromise, so choose the lens that will fit 85% of what you expect to be photographing. If it's birds, you'll need the longer lenses or the 2x teleconverter for certain; if it's elk in Yellowstone, or moose in Maine, the 300 or the 100-400 range would work for most situations, along with an occasional teleconverter added.

Hope this helps, and good luck!
